With the days getting longer, gardeners are busy planning for springtime, thinking about what new plants, flowers, trees and shrubs they’re going to put in their garden or yard. If you’re among them, here are five gardening trends you might want to keep in mind as you get ready for planting season. The first is a move to native plants, and a reduced emphasis on exotic species. One of the big plusses for gardeners: native plants are easier to care for – they thrive in their native habitats, so you can spend less time and money cultivating them.
Another top trend is the blended garden: people are mixing annuals with perennial gardens, planting unusual color combinations, and mixing fruit bushes among flowers. This frees people to be as creative and imaginative as they want, and makes for some very interesting gardens.
A move to organic gardening is another shift we see. As part of the green revolution, gardeners are using les pesticides and herbicides. Today’s garden supply centers and plant nurseries typically carry a range of organic gardening products that make it simple to be garden organically.
Yet another major trend is container gardening. It’s the easy way to create a garden, or to add some new variety and color to a garden you already have. No need to plant – simply fill decorative pots with healthy full-sized plants, and apply liberally to your yard or garden.
A fifth big trend we see is the home vegetable garden. It’s not just for the White House – it can be for your house, too. It’s a great way to get even more back from the time you put into your garden. It could lower your food bills, and maybe even get you eating more healthily.
Taken together, these trends show we’re getting closer to our gardens, and treating them more like friends than objects to be admired from afar. If you need ideas on how to incorporate any of these trends into your garden, visit your local garden supply center or plant nursery or landscaping company. And if you’re in the northern New Jersey, New York metro area, we invite you to drop by The Farm at Green Village, where we have 32 acres filled with plants and great gardening ideas, and the most knowledgeable and friendly staff in the region.
